Digital Retinal Photography
DIGITAL RETINAL PHOTOGRAPHY (Zeiss FF450 Plus with Visupac)
At 20/20 Eye Associates we offer the latest in digital retinal photography with our Zeiss FF450 plus retinal camera. This procedure enables us to take ultra high resolution images of the retina, optic nerve, lens, and external components of the eye. With these photos we are able to monitor, document, and communicate any ocular changes with our patients. We find this technology extremely helpful in treating conditions such as glaucoma, diabetes, and macular degeneration.
Optical Coherence Tomography
OPTICAL COHERENCE TOMOGRAPHY (Zeiss Stratus OCT)
Laser scanning of the retina with our Zeiss Stratus Optical Coherence Tomographer enables cross sectional imaging of the retina and optic nerve. This can be compared to a CAT or CT scan used to give cross sectional images of the brain. The difference is that this instrument uses a non invasive laser light instead of x rays to obtain an image. The procedure takes only a few minutes and is completely painless. During the procedure the patient is seated behind the instrument and asked to maintain fixation at a small light inside the instrument. While the patient is looking at the target the laser scans the retinal tissue in a matter of seconds. The digital color image obtained allows us to visualize abnormalities or structures within the retina down to less than 10 microns. This procedure is very helpful measuring nerve damage in glaucoma. Retinal changes in diabetes, macular degeneration, central serous retinopathy, cystoid macular edema, epiretinal membranes, hypertensive retinopathy, and other conditions are also able to be managed more accurately than ever before.
Laser Scanning Polarimetry
LASER SCANNING POLARIMETRY (Zeiss GDx Nerve Fiber Layer Analyzer)
Laser scanning polarimetry of the retinal nerve fiber layer with our Zeiss GDX nerve fiber layer analyzer enables measurement of extremely small changes retinal nerve fiber thickness. This instrument scans the retina with a laser light and measures polarization to detect microscopic alterations or defects in the nerve layer in the retina. During this procedure the patient is asked to look at a red blinking light while the laser scans the retina. The test is completely painless and provides a digital color nerve fiber analysis in a few minutes. This test is extremely helpful in managment and early detection of glaucoma.
CORNEAL TOPOGRAPHY (Zeiss Atlas Corneal Topographer)
Corneal topography is a non-invasive medical imaging technique for mapping the surface curvature of the cornea, the outer structure of the eye. Since the cornea is normally responsible for some 70% of the eye's refractive power, its topography is of critical importance in determining the quality of vision.
The three-dimensional map is therefore a valuable aid to assist in the diagnosis and treatment of a number of conditions; in planning refractive surgery such as LASIK and evaluation of its results; or in assessing the fit of contact lenses. Corneal topography extends the measurement range from the four points a few millimeters apart that is offered by keratometry to a grid of thousands of points covering the entire cornea. The procedure is carried out in seconds and is completely painless.
The patient is seated facing a bowl containing an illuminated pattern, most commonly a series of concentric rings. The pattern is focused on the anterior surface of the patient's cornea and reflected back to a digital camera at the centre of the bowl. The topography of the cornea is revealed by the shape taken by the reflected pattern. A computer provides the necessary analysis, typically determining the position and height of several thousand points across the cornea. The topographical map can be represented in a number of graphical formats, such as a sagittal map, which color-codes the steepness of curvature according to its dioptric value.
Computerized Visual Field Testing
COMPUTERIZED VISUAL FIELD TESTING (Zeiss Humphrey FDT and Zeiss Humphrey HFA II Field Analyzer)
Our medical clinic utilizes the latest in computerized visual field testing. A visual field tests the central and peripheral vision (side vision) to ensure that the visual pathway is healthy. This pathway begins at the eye and travels through the brain until it ends at the visual cortex(visual processing region). There can be various problems in your peripheral vision that will indicate abnormalities in this pathway.
These problems include diseases like glaucoma, optic nerve disease, brain tumors, pituitary tumors, and strokes. Visual field testing is an important component of an eye examination. That is why our practice incorporates computerized visual field testing in annual eye health examinations.
CORNEAL PACHYMETRY (DGH-550 PACHETTE 2)
Corneal pachymetry is an instrument that measures the thickness of the cornea. Our computerized corneal pachymeter utilizes ultrasound to provide a precise measurement of corneal thickness. During the procedure anesthetic drops are placed in the eye, and a small probe is placed on the tear film. The measurement is completed in less than 20 seconds, and is completely painless.
